Painting Demonstration #1.

Winter Tree
Winter Tree

For a couple of years now people have been asking to see a video on U Tube of my painting process.   To be honest I have always hesitated for a couple of reasons.   I suppose it felt like I would be essentially giving away my process that I have spent thousands of hours and dollars refining.   I don't know if withholding made me a selfish person or a smart person.   This was one reason.   The other reason was wondering if what I had to offer was really of any merit.   Am I doing anything any different from the next watercolor artist?  Am I that unique?  Yesterday I had the realization that it was time.   I am trying to develop a workshop schedule and as a relatively new artist I need to get my name out there.    I have brushes with my name on them....I have corporate sponsors.....which still amazes me......but what I do not have is art groups asking me to come and workshop with them.    I thought maybe publishing a video would inspire confidence that my process can be embraced by watercolorists at every level.     With that said,   I offer a quick video demonstration, under 8 minutes in length in which I paint from start to finish an 10 x 14 transparent watercolor.    I use only four pigments and two brushes.   The music on the video is "The Blowers Daughter".  I am using the Squirrel Mop and the Extended point Kolinsky Sable from my Sandra Strohschein Rosemary Brush Set.  The pigments are Rembrandt, French Ultramarine Deep, Cerulean Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Cobalt.  (Sorry 5...I forgot the Cerulean) .  The paper is Arches 140# CP.

Here are the links to my brush set which I sell from my own inventory or you can order direct from the company.    And also the link to the video.   God Bless you and and "Let's Paint"!

Beautiful painting, beautiful style. I loved the demo.

Thank you very much Margaret! I appreciate the time you took to watch my demonstration and comment :)
Let's Paint! ;)

Beautiful your work Sandra¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

Thank you Graciela for taking the time to watch my video and comment! :)

I sure liked it, a very nice and skillfull approach! A painter that knows what she is doing and aiming for!
Just a few brushes, a good paper, and 4 no 5 pigments!😉
I painted along with the video, and that was fun!
I discovered my needlepoint brush again! While it waited for 15 years in a poy on my painting table! I gonna use it more from now on.
Thanks Sandra!
Looking forward to the second production!
Best wishes Edo

Thank you so much Edo for taking the time to comment and watch my video! Glad you are using that old brush! Warm regards! Let's Paint Edo!

I really enjoyed your demo and come from a completely different background as although I neither have sponsorship nor a range of brushes I do have art groups contacting me to deliver workshops and demos to them. I do very little advertising and I tend to get work through word of mouth recommendation and it certainly brings in more revenue that painting sales!! The other thing is I absolutely love it, I love sharing my secrets in fact when I get going they often can't stop me!!! It has taken me years to learn and develop, and my aim is to share all those things I didn't know and try and make someone else's journey a little faster with a few short cuts I never had... the joy it brings when I see all those light bulb moments on their faces is fantastic!!

Hi Judith!

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my demonstration! I am so happy that you are thriving in teaching and workshops! I love sharing my process in the workshop venue just as you do although I have to admit it was a little nerve wracking in the beginning. :) My hesitation in posting a video was that I did not want to give away a process that students have paid to share in. I have had discussion with a number of professional artists who will not do free video demonstrations at all, some will give only a portion of their technique, others will have a paid podcast or lesson....there are so many options out there......For myself I felt that a quick demonstration without speaking, just painting was a good way of showing my one pass method of painting which works incredibly well En Plein Air....you know how hard it is for paper to dry in the field....:) ....and give my friends and followers a quick lesson....without taking away from the students who have paid for instruction.......:) Thanks again for your thoughts and most of all for the joy and generosity you have sharing your skills with others! Warm regards Judith! :)

I get that completely Sandra...I can see the hesitation in doing videos for free, especially when others have paid... I realise I misunderstood what you had said and that it was to do with videos not workshops.... can you not do a video or online lessons and offer them for sale? I think what you have done here is an excellent idea... it gives a feeling for how you work but not too much... I tend to want to spill everything yet need to leave people waiting more!!

Judith, Hi! (I tend to jump in without saying Hi.....) sorry....:)

I am so glad you caught my meaning.....I think it would be difficult to sell video lessons online...there is so much free stuff out there. By some really stellar artists......I think I will probably make a DVD and sell that. I know I love my DVDs that I can study.....

It was interesting....studying with Alvaro Castagnet....he could not allow videos to be taken of his process because of conflicts of interest with his DVD producers.....(obviously).....but when I came home I found dozens of video clips on U Tube of him painting at different locations....I think we are in the middle of a massive change up......the way information is shared....I think I will just keep doing what I have been..painting, blogging and traveling and sharing my process in the way that feels right at the time. I will teach workshops as they become available to me..but also utilize our wonderful technology..... So very nice chatting with you on this ever evolving subject. Let's Paint!
